Situation: 60 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to the Canary Islands.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Wednesday the 26th of January 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 60 travellers, including 13 women, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from Laayoune in the early morning, heading towards the Canary Islands. We managed to reach the travellers and got their GPS position. They told us that they were almost out of fuel. We relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, who confirmed that they had already localised the boat with their helicopter and expected to arrive to assist them with a rescue vessel within four hours. At 22.50 CET we could see online that one of the rescue assets of Salvamento Maritimo had reached the last known position of the travellers, and Salvamento Maritimo confirmed to us on the phone that rescue was ongoing. Half an hour later, the relative told us that they had just spoken to the travellers who had been rescued.
