Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 16th of October 2020Case name: 2019_10_16-WM505
Situation: 53 men, four women leave Laayoune and arrive on Fuerteventura.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean
Summary of the Case:
In the evening of 16 October, we were contacted by several different relatives of travelers who had left from Laayoune. It was clear that 53 men and four women had left from Western Sahara in the small hours of that morning. Later that evening we were able to get a number for the boat, but, given the lack of mobile reception in the middle of the ocean, we were unable to get in touch with the boat. We contacted the Spanish search and rescue organisation, Salvamento Maritimo in Las Palmas who took the information. Two relatives got in touch with us asking about the boat. Fortunately, the first person who had contacted us phoned us again shortly after 22:00 to tell us that the boat had arrived on Fuerteventura. This was confirmed by Salvamento Maritimo. We relate the good news to the concerned relatives. Boza, welcome to Europe.
