Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 10th February 2022Case name: 2022_02_10-ATL029
Situation: 61 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Gran Canaria.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Thursday the 10th of February 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 61 travellers, including 15 women, several of them pregnant, and five children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from between Laayoune and Boujdour the same morning just after midnight on a grey rubber boat. They had run out of food and water, and several people onboard were sick. We managed to reach the travellers and got their GPS position. We immediately relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. We stayed in touch with the travellers, and updated Salvamento Maritimo with their position as well as the deteriorating situation onboard as the boat started taking in water and the travellers feared it would capsize. At 19.40 CET Salvamento Maritimo confirmed to us on the phone that rescue was underway. Later in the evening, we received a confirmation that the travellers had been rescued and would be brought to Gran Canaria.
