Summary: On Thursday the 13th of January 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 36 travellers, 32 men and four women, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from Laayoune, heading towards the Canary Islands. We were not able to establish a direct contact to the travellers, but relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. They told us that they had just rescued a boat corresponding to this description and that the travellers would be taken to Gran Canaria. The next day we were called by one of the travellers who told us that they had arrived well to Gran Canaria.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
