Case name: 2021_08_21-WM676

Situation: 64 travellers in distress on their way to the Canary Islands rescued by fishers.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea

Summary On Saturday the 21st of August 2021 the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 64 travellers, including 11 women, four children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from Laayoune at 02.00 CEST the same morning on a grey rubber boat, heading towards the Canary Islands. The relative was worried, as they could no longer reach the travellers.
We were never able to reach the travellers directly, and did not manage to find out their exact position. However, we informed the local Guardia Civil about the distress situation.
We later called Salvamento Marítimo, learned that travellers had been rescued by a fishing boat with the help of SM Palmas.
