Summary of the case: On Saturday the 12th of February 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 19 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from around Maamoura, Tunisia, the previous evening. Their engine had stopped working, and the travellers were therefore left adrift. We were not able to establish a direct contact to the travellers, but relayed the information we had to the relevant search and rescue authorities. The following day, the relative informed us that the travellers had been intercepted by the Tunisian navy and brought back to Tunisia.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
