Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 17th August 2021

Case name: 2021_08_17-CM543

Situation: Alarm Phone alerted by relative to 10-12 travellers in distress in the Central Med. Fortunately, they arrived to Pantelleria.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean

Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 17th of August 2021, the Alarm Phone was alerted by a relative to a group of 10-12 young men on a rubber boat in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The relative had last spoken to them the previous night at around 20.00 CEST where they were asking for rescue. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers. According to the relative they had at this point been close to the Italian island Pantelleria, but we were not able to get their exact GPS position. The travellers had left from Mahdia, Tunisia, at around 22.00 CEST on the 15th of August. We alerted the relevant authorities, forwarding all the information we had. Later in the evening, the coastguard and local police on Pantelleria confirmed to us on the phone that the travellers had arrived to the island.

  • Border police patrols

While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33). • Exclusive Economic Zone

Maritime area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea in which the coastal state exercises sovereign rights for the purposes of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, the seabed and its subsoil and the superjacent waters.
