Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations 16th January 2024Case name: 2024_01_16-CM012
Situation: 40 travellers in distress in the Central Med, probably intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 16th of January 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 40 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Libya on a blue boat. We were not able to establish direct contact to the boat, but the relative told us that one engine had broken. The relative also gave us their GPS position. We immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We never managed to reach the travellers. Despite many attempts, we were never able to get information from the coastguards about any efforts to rescue the travellers. Eventually we had to close the case without knowing exactly what had happened. Most probably the travellers were intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.
