Summary of Case: In the afternoon of January 1st 2022 Alarm Phone was called by a relative who alerted us to a group of 24 people in distress, including women, children and men. The caller related the group had left from Boughalem, Algeria, towards Spain in a wooden boat but was unable to provide contact numbers of people on the boat. We forwarded the alert to authorities at 16.04 CET. At 17.36 CET the relative called us again, relating that the boat had been found by the Spanish Search and Rescue organisation Salvamento Marítimo (SM) and was being brought to Ibiza.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
