Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 21st December 2021

Case name: 2021_12_21-WM817

Situation: 17 travellers in distress in the Alboran, arrived to Motril.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean Sea

Summary: On Tuesday the 21st of December 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 17 travellers in distress in the Alboran Sea. The travellers had left from Al Hoceima the previous morning on a green wooden boat, heading towards Motril. We managed to reach the travellers, but were not able to get their GPS position as the connection was very poor. At 02.51 CET we alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the distress of the travellers, forwarding all information we had. As there were many rescue operations in the area, we were not able to get a confirmation from Salvamento Maritimo of a rescue of the travellers, but in the late morning the relative confirmed that the travellers had arrived safely to Motril.
