Summary: On Monday the 20th of December 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 20 travellers in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had departed around 24 hours earlier from the West of Algeria, heading towards Spain on a rubber boat. Despite many attempts, we were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers. However, the relative told us that the boat was around 5 km from Almeria. We alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, forwarding them all the information we had about the boat. A few hours later, we learned that Salvamento Maritimo had rescued a boat matching the description we gave. Shortly after, the relative confirmed that he had spoken to the travellers who were onboard a rescue vessel being brought to Spain.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
