Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea.
Summary: On Saturday the 18th of December 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative t a group of 60 travellers, including 10 women, one of them pregnant, and two children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from Laayoune the same morning at around 01.00 CET on a grey rubber boat, heading towards the Canary Islands. We managed to reach the travellers and got their GPS position. They told us that waves were getting high and they were exhausted. We immediately relayed the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. We stayed in contact with the travellers and were able to forward their updated GPS positions to Salvamento Maritimo as well as information about the situation onboard. In the early hours of the morning, the travellers told us that they had run out of fuel as well as food and drinking water. At 08.10 CET Salvamento Maritimo told us that the rescue operation was in progress, and three hours later they confirmed that the rescue was completed and that the travellers would be brought to Gran Canaria. The relative later confirmed that they had arrived safely.
