Situation: 58 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Gran Canaria.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Tuesday the 25th of January 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 58 travellers, including 14 women and a child, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left at midnight from around Laayoune on a grey boat, heading towards Las Palmas. We managed to reach the travellers and get their GPS position. However, communication was difficult due to a very bad connection. We forwarded the position together with all other information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. When we reached the travellers again at 20.47 CET they were panicking as the situation onboard was getting increasingly dangerous. Online, we could see that one of the rescue assets of Salvamento Maritimo was heading towards the position we had given them. Later, we found out via Spanish media that a boat matching the one we had been alerted to had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Gran Canaria. The following day the relative confirmed the rescue of the travellers.
