Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 15th of December 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team received a direct call from a boat in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. Onboard were 107 travellers, including 15 women and five children. They were travelling on a blue wooden boat. The connection was bad, but we managed to get their GPS position, and forwarded this together with all other information we had to the relevant rescue authorities. We stayed in touch with the travellers and updated the rescue authorities with their position whenever possible. The following afternoon we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Sea Eye 4 operated by the organisation Sea Eye.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
