Summary of the case: On Monday the 29th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 48 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from the Tunisian island Kerkennah on an iron boat and according to the relative their engine had broken and people were in the water. The relative gave us their GPS position and we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that the Tunisian coastguard had found the travellers and brought them back to Tunisia.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
