Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 16th of November 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 118 travellers, including 14 women and six children in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zawiyah the previous evening at 22.00 CET on a white rubber boat. We managed to reach the travellers and got their GPS position. They told us that their boat was deflating and water was entering. We immediately alerted all relevant rescue authorities to the distress of the travellers. We stayed in contact with the travellers and relayed their updated position and information about the deteriorating situation onboard to the rescue authorities. In the night, we lost contact to the travellers. The following day we learned that the travellers had arrived to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
