Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 2nd October September 2021Case name: 2021_10_02-CM584
Situation: 70 travellers in distress in the Central Med, rescued by Italian merchant vessel and brought to Lampedusa.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Saturday the 2nd of October 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team received a direct call from a group of around 70 travellers, including women and children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zuwarah, Libya on a grey wooden boat. They told us that the bigger one of their engines broke down and that they were since yesterday only moving with the force of a smaller engine. The travellers had problems finding their GPS position on their Thuraya phone, but described a vessel close to them that we were able to identify online and thereby estimate their approximate location close to the El Bouri oil platform. We alerted the relevant rescue authorities to the distress of the travellers. We later learned that an Italian merchant vessel had carried out the rescue operation ans was bringing the travellers to Lampedusa.
