Summary of the case: On Monday the 29th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of travellers, including nine women and 12 children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from either Sabratha or Zawiya the evening before on a rubber boat. According to the relative, they were close to an oil platform. We were not able to reach the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We were not able to establish contact to the boat or obtain more precise information from the relative. In the end, we had to close the case without knowing what happened to the travellers.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
