Summary of the case: On Monday the 18th of October 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 11 travellers, including one minor, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Tripoli the day before at around 22.00 local time on a white fiber glass boat. We managed to reach the boat and got their GPS position. We forwarded this together with all other information we had to the relevant rescue authorities. After this, we could no longer reach the travellers, and both the Maltese and Italian coastguard refused to share information with us about any rescue operations conducted in the area. We later learned that four boats had arrived to Lampedusa and believe that the travellers we were in touch with were amongst those.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
