Summary of the case: On Thursday the 11th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 50 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The relative told us that 20 people had fallen overboard and that their boat had continued north. We received their GPS position from the relative and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the Italian coastguard who had also managed to retrieve the people who had fallen overboard. According to the survivors, no one from the boat was missing.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
