Situation: 52 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, probably rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Lanzarote.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Wednesday the 13th of October 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 52 travellers, 27 men, 17 women and six children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from Guelmim at 05.00 CEST two days earlier on a white rubber boat, heading towards the Canary Islands. We were not able to reach the travellers directly and where therefore not able to find out their exact location. As they were travelling without a satellite phone they were not reachable as soon as they were out of the reception area close to the coast. At 18.11 CEST we alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the distress of the travellers. The following day we reached out Salvamento Maritimo and Guardia Civil on the Canary Islands. They told us that there had been many rescue operations in the area, including of a boat that matched the description we had, which had been brought to Lanzarote. We were never able to reach the travellers to confirm their arrival, but assume that they were among the rescued people.
