Situation: 42 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Lanzarote.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Friday the 15th of October 2021, the Alarm Phone was alerted by a relative to a group of 42 travellers, 15 women, 25 men and two children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left two days earlier at 05.00 CEST from Guelmim on a white rubber boat and were heading towards the Canary Islands. We were not able to reach the travellers directly, but at 15.09 CEST we called the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo on the Canary Islands and forwarded all the information we had about the distress case. In the evening we spoke to Salvamento Maritimo again. They told us that they had been searching with planes without finding the boat in question. The following day the relative informed us that the travellers had arrived safely to Lanzarote. Salvamento Maritimo also confirmed that they had rescued a boat corresponding to our description.
