Summary of the Case: In the night of the 16th of October, a relative alerted the Alarm Phone shift team to a boat in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The group of around 50 travellers, among them 9 women and 4 children, had left from Tan Tan in the early morning of the 15th of October in a rubber boat, heading towards Lanzarote. The shift team could establish contact with the travellers and got their position and learned, that the boat was drifting as there was no more fuel left. The shift team immediately relayed all the information to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, which later confirmed the rescue of the boat with around 50 travellers.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
