Summary of the case: On Thursday the 19th of September 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 56 travellers, including 10 women and three children, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Tan Tan on a black rubber boat at around midnight and had thus been at sea for almost 24 hours. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers, but we received a recent position from the relative. We then immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. Throughout the night we remained unable to reach the boat. The following morning we learned that the travellers had been rescued and brought to Lanzarote.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
