Summary of Case In the evening of September 12th Alarmphone was called by a relative who alerted us to group of 10-15 people in distress off the coast of San Jose, Spain, drifting. According to the caller they had departed from Algeria. We were unable to establish direct contact to the boat. Before we were able to inform authorities, the relative called us again, informing us that the “Spanish marine” was in the process of rescuing the group in distress and everyone was fine.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
