Summary of the Case: On the 4th of May, a relative alerted the Alarm Phone shift team to a boat in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The group of 18 travellers had left from Mostaganem, Algeria, in direction of Cartagena on the 3rd of May on a iron boat and could not be reached anymore. The shift team tried multiple times to reach them but did not manage and therefore alerted the relevant authorities without having had direct contact to them. More relatives contacted the shift team, asking for news about their loved ones. In the late evening we finally reached the travellers and learned that they had safely arrived on land, most probably in Cartagena.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
