Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 21st November 2021Case name: 2021_11_21-WM785
Situation: 53 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, intercepted by the Moroccan Navy.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Sunday the 21st of November 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 53 travellers, including several women and a child, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from Laayoune the same morning at around 03.00 CET, heading towards Lanzarote. We were not able to reach the travellers, but forwarded the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. They told us that they had already spotted two boats in distress between Laayoune and Lanzarote with their aircraft and that rescue boats were on their way. Just past midnight we spoke to Salvamento Maritimo again, and they informed us that they had not rescued a boat corresponding to the information we had given them earlier. The following day we learned from the relative that the travellers had been intercepted by the Moroccan Navy. This was confirmed by Salvamento Maritimo and by the travellers themselves.
