Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 1st June 2022Case name: 2022_06_01-ATL058
Situation: 54 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Ocean, intercepted by the Moroccan navy.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 1st of June 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 54 travellers, including six women and five children, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Tarfaya in the night of the 21st of May on a rubber boat and were headed towards Lanzarote. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers, but immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. We continued trying to reach the travellers, but were never successful. In the meantime, we were in contact with Salvamento Maritimo who told us that they were searching for the boat with their aircraft during the days. The following evening we spoke to the Moroccan rescue authorities who told us that a fishing vessel was close to the boat in distress and would stand by until the Moroccan navy arrived. The following morning the Moroccan rescue authorities confirmed that the Moroccan navy had picked up the travellers and brought them back to Morocco.
