Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 19th September 2021Case name: 2021_09_19-CM567
Situation: 13 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea intercepted and brought back to Libya.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Sunday the 19th of September 2021 in the morning, the Alarm Phone shift team received a direct call from a wooden boat in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. Onboard was a group of 13 travellers; four men, five women and four children. The travellers told us that they had run out of petrol and were therefore left adrift. We sent the information we had via email to all relevant rescue authorities, and passed it on via phone to the Italian coastguard as well. In a call from the travellers at 10.52 CEST they told us that they could see a bigger vessel approaching. After this call we lost contact to the travellers. Later, we found out that the travellers had been intercepted and brought back to Libya.
