Summary of Case In the early afternoon of October 6th Alarm Phone was called by a relative, alerting us to a group of five women and 55 men in distress who had departed Zawiyah two days ago. The relative was unable to provide a satellite telephone number. We nevertheless alerted authorities at 13.55 CEST. At 14.41 CEST the same relative called us, relating they had received knowledge of the arrival of the group of travellers to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
