Summary of the case: On Sunday the 13th of October 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 159 travellers, including 11 women and several children, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Niodior, Senegal, and were heading towards the Canary Islands. We did not have a phone number of the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to El Hierro. This was afterwards confirmed by the relative.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
