Summary of the Case:
During the night of May 8th, 2024, we received information about a boat carrying 47 people in distress near the Greek island of Crete. We were not able to reach the people to confirm their position and their situation. We informed the Hellenic Coast Guard about the situation, as the relative who informed us was very worried. The next day we learned from local media reports that the Hellenic Coast Guard had “located and rescued” the group 15 nautical miles south of the Greek island of Gavdos. The people were then taken to Crete. The Hellenic Coast Guard confirmed this information on the phone later that day.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
