Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 11th of March 2024
Case name: 2024_03_11-Eastern Med - 111
Situation: 55 people initially missing, later confirmed safe on Gavdos island, Crete, Grece
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Eastern Med

Summary of the Case:
In the morning of March 11, 2024, Alarm Phone received information about two boats which departed from Libya, one of which on the small island of Gavdos (south of Crete, Greece), while the other, carrying 55 people, was still at sea.
At 11:47 CET, we informed the Hellenic Coast Guard about the missing boat. At the time, we had no concrete coordinates, and only knew that the boat was in sight of the island of Gavdos. At 12:21 CET, JRCC Piraeus called the Alarm Phone and asked for more information, which we did not have at that moment. At 16:42 CET, JRCC Piraeus informed us that they were looking for the boat with five assets, including helicopters.
During the night, we could not get updated information on the whereabouts of the group. The next morning, JRCC Piraeus informed us that they assume that both boats arrived on Gavdos. However, they did not know where exactly in order to confirm if the arrivals would match both boats Alarm Phone was alerted to. At 11:15 CET on March 12th, JRCC Pireaus finally confirmed that "all the people have been found on Gavdos" and that two boats were located.

Maritime area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea in which the coastal state exercises sovereign rights for the purposes of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, the seabed and its subsoil and the superjacent waters.
