10.07.2021 / 21:40 / Aegean Sea

Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 09h of July 2021

Case name: 20210624-AEG793

Situation: 20 travellers in distress in Greek waters. Later rescued by Turkish Coast Guard.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Aegean Sea

Summary of the Case:

On the 9th of July at 12:27 CEST we were informed by a realtive about a boat with 20 people in distress in Greek waters. At 12:48 CEST we alerted the Greek Coastguard about the situation. Right afterwards we reached the people on the boat for the first (and only) time, but the connection was too bad to get a new GPS position. At 14:33 CEST we called the Greek Coastguard again to ask if they launched a rescue operation. They said that they had sent assets to the GPS location but could not find the boat. They add that the Turkish CG had been alerted and they had found the boat in Turkish waters. When we call the Turkish Coastguard they tell us they are right now transferring the 20 people into their boat. That means another pushback took place.
