60 people die, 62 rescued 30 sea miles off Libyan coast

On the 16th of July 2014, 62 people were rescued off their sinking vessel, with approximately 60 more missing. Following reports of survivors there were more than 120 people on board of their vessel.

Italian authorities have so far not confirmed the incident.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
