Summary of the Cases: On Monday the 14th of March 2016, our Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to one distress situation in the Aegean region, near Chios Island. At 6.48am we received coordinates of a vessel in distress through our Syrian activist allies. We learned that there were 41 people on the vessel, including 17 children, and they had problems with reigniting their engine. They were still in Turkish waters, on their way to Chios. We established contact to the vessel at 7.20am but communication was difficult due to the noisy wind. Shortly afterwards we received the confirmation that they had been brought back to Turkey by the Turkish coastguards.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
