Summary of the case: On Sunday the 25th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 40 travellers, including several women and children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They had left from Sfax, Tunisia, in the evening of the 22nd of August. We were not able to reach the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We were never able to reach the travellers or get any information from authorities and we could not match the boat with any arrivals we knew of. Eventually, we had to close the case without knowing what happened to the people.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
