Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations 2nd August 2024Case name: 2024_08_02-CM260
Situation: 36 travellers in distress in the Central Med, intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Friday the 2nd of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 36 travellers, including two children and a pregnant woman, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Garabouli, Libya, the previous evening on a purple rubber boat. They told us that their boat was deflating and that it was taking in water. They also reported having no more food or drinking water left. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers who told us that two people lost consciousness and that several people fell overboard. We could hear their panic increase as time passed. We passed on their updated positions and information about the situation to the authorities as often as possible. Later, we learned that the so-called Libyan coastguard had found the boat and returned everyone to Libya.
