Summary of the case: On Thursday the 1st of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 29 travellers, including seven women and a child, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Tripoli, Libya, in the early hours of the morning on a fiberglass boat and were almost out of fuel. We got their GPS position from the relative and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that the travellers were rescued by the NGO vessel Louise Michel.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
