Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 30th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 75 travellers, including women and children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They had left from Garabouli, Libya, the day before on a black rubber boat. They told us that their boat was deflating and that water was entering. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned from a relative that the travellers had been rescued by local fishermen and were brought back to Garabouli.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
