Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations 30th July 2024Case name: 2024_07_30-CM249
Situation: 60 travellers in distress in the Central Med, probably intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 30th of July 2024 just before midnight, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 60 travellers, including five children and five women, one of them pregnant, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zawiya in the morning of the 29th on a rubber boat. We were not able to reach the travellers, but from the relative we got their GPS position and then immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We never managed to reach the travellers and were also not able to match the information we had with any arrivals. Most likely, the travellers were intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.
