Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 17th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 60 travellers, including five children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from between Tripoli and Zuwara the previous evening on a white wooden boat. They told us that they had no more fuel left and were therefore drifting. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and forwarded updates from the boat to the authorities as often as possible. Later, we learned that the travellers had been assisted by the NGO vessel Nadir who had accompanied them to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
