Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 20th of March 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 75 travellers, including three women and eight children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers told us that they were almost out of fuel, that the weather conditions were bad and that they had no more food or drinking water left. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. After our initial call, we could no longer reach the travellers. Later, we learned from a relative that the travellers had arrived safely to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
