Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 12th of June 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of four travellers, all men, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They had left from Sabratha, Libya, the previous evening on a white fiberglass boat. We were not able to reach them and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that a boat matching the description we had been given had arrived to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
