Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 16th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 40 travellers, including five young children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Tagiura, Libya, the evening before on a fiberglass boat. They told us that they were drifting. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the boat and forwarded updates to the authorities as often as possible. Later, we learned from the relative that the travellers had been intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
