Case name: 2024_07_15-CM222

Situation: 50 travellers in distress in the Central Med, shipwrecked close to the island Kerkennah.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean

Summary of the case: On Monday the 15th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 50 travellers in distress close to the coast of the Tunisian island Kerkennah. According to the relative, the boat was about to capsize. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. The Tunisian coastguard confirmed to us on the phone that they were searching for the travellers. We contacted the Tunisian coastguard many times, trying to get information about whether they had found the boat, but were told that there had been no rescue operation in the area and that they were also not aware of a shipwreck. The following day, the relative informed us that the boat had shipwrecked. We were not able to confirm this information via other sources.
