Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 6th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 36 travellers, including two women, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sfax, Tunisia in the evening of the 4th of August on an iron boat. We were not able to reach the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. The following day we learned from the relative that the travellers had arrived to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
