Case name: 2021_13_11-CM623

Situation: Around 100 travellers in distress in the Central Med, rescued by NGO vessel Nadir.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean

Summary: On Saturday the 13th of November 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 100 travellers, including 10 women and 20 children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zuwara on a grey wooden boat and were heading towards Lampedusa. We were not able to reach the boat directly, but the relative gave us their GPS position from an hour earlier, which we immediately relayed to all relevant rescue authorities together will all other information we had about the distress case. Just before midnight, we managed to reach the travellers. They told us that they were running out of fuel and needed urgent rescue. They also gave us their updated position, which we forwarded to the authorities. We managed to stay in touch with the boat and updated the authorities with their position when possible. We could hear the travellers’ panic increase as the situation onboard deteriorated. In the morning, we learned that the NGO vessel Nadir, operated by the German NGO ResQship, had rescued the travellers.

  • Border police patrols

While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33). • Exclusive Economic Zone

Maritime area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea in which the coastal state exercises sovereign rights for the purposes of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, the seabed and its subsoil and the superjacent waters. Its breadth is 200 nautical miles from the straight baselines from which the territorial sea is measured (UNCLOS, Arts. 55, 56 and 57).
