Case name: 2024_07_14-CM221

Situation: Eight travellers in distress in the Central Med, stranded on island then brought to Tunisia.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean

Summary of the case: On Sunday the 14th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of eight travellers, all men, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from El Kala, Algeria, in the morning of the 12th of July, heading towards Sardinia. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. After a long time of no contact, the relative managed to speak to the travellers again and informed us that they had arrived to an island, probably the Tunisian island Galite. We informed the authorities that the group was stuck on the island with no possibility to reach the mainland. Later, we learned from the relative that the travellers were brougt to the Tunisian mainland.
