Situation: 32 travellers in distress in the Central Med, intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Saturday the 15th of June 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 32 travellers, including six women, two of them pregnant, and two babies, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They told us that their engine had broken. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the people and forwarded their position and updates from the boat to the authorities when possible. Later, we learned from the so-called Libyan coastguard that they had intercepted the travellers and were bringing them to Tripoli.
